A tin shed, a kiln and five glazes.
Saltbush Kiln is Marlo, a potter, and a studio assistant who comes in three days a week. Marlo learned production pottery in Sydney, throwing two hundred mugs a day for a café chain, and moved to Bellingen in 2014. The first kiln load came out in 2016.
The studio's name comes from its first glaze. Each winter a family farm near Hay sends a few bags of ash from their saltbush prunings. Washed and sieved, it makes a soft grey-green with rust spots where the iron comes through.
Everything we sell is made here, from clay we buy in bags from a supplier in Sydney to glazes we mix by hand.

Made to be used
Everything we make goes through a dishwasher. If a glaze runs onto a kiln shelf, that piece goes in the bin, and seconds are sold as seconds at the studio, never in the shop.
Visit the studio
We're about ten minutes from the centre of Bellingen. Workshops start at the studio; for anything else, email first so someone is in.
